This fine fellow is El Chupacabra from the "Planes" movie, built with the Zvezda snap-fit kit.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">

The kit comes with simple solid color plastic components, and stickers to make up for all of the detail. I used those stickers to fashion masks for the wings, and then cut-to-fit masks for the wheels, and did the stripes freehand.

These are the best snap-fit kits I've ever seen, and I
highly recommend them to any modeler, even if you don't have a kid that
might want to build one.

I have spent the past few weeks working on one of the Remora kits from Industria Mechanika, and let me say now that I recommend their kits without reservation. I have several now, and each of them is incredible.

For this one I'm converting the ship into a flying noodle house, inspired by the movie "Fifth Element." There's a long way to go at this point, but it's all starting to come together. Once the kitchen is built out I'll start in on the heavy weathering. I will also be making polymer clay foods, using dollhouse techniques, that won't involve paint.

This kit represents a real stretch for me, as the polymer clay is new, and I'm not much of a scratch builder. But almost everything in the kitchen will be scratch built. In fact, everything in the photo at this point is - including the unfinished cooler cabinet on the back right. I need to space the shelves so you can see the food, which is why I haven't finished the build.

A lot of the little details, like weathering on the engine, or notes in the wheelhouse, will be fairly hard to see, but I've enjoyed putting them there.

Stay tuned....

This was a fun, and reasonably quick paint up of the DAK Officer from Alpine Models. I really love their sculpts, and the quality of their resin is excellent -- something I don't say often about resin.

I look forward to painting more of these.

It was painted largely with P3 acrylics, and weathered with Secret Weapon pigments. The base is made up of natural soil, rocks, and pigments.
I am happy to be participating a bit more directly with the NOCF charity army projects this year -- with a set of painted models, in addition to the support of Secret Weapon Miniatures.

They have posted a WIP page for all of the army builds, so you can see exactly how things are coming together in real time.

I only have good things to say about the NOVA Open Charitable Foundation, and the money they raise for charity. Money raised through the raffle goes directly to the charities, and you get a chance to win your choice of several incredible armies. There are also weekly drawings -- including several Secret Weapon gift vouchers.

Check it out - and then give them your money!

For my part I will be painting Marneus Calgar and Honor Guard for the Ultramarines army.

I am especially pleased with how smooth I managed to get the blending on the front of his leg armor.

The first show of the year net me five wins at the IPMS Hobby Expo in Petaluma, CA:

<span class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"type":45,"tn":"*G"}" id="fbPhotoPageCaption" tabindex="0">Gold - Dioramas - "Castle in the Sky"
Gold - Automobiles - Landscaping Truck
Silver - Figures, Fantasy - Ruby
Silver - Figures, Historical - Japanese Bust
Bronze - Automobiles - Oldsmobile 442 Junker

<span class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"type":45,"tn":"*G"}" id="fbPhotoPageCaption" tabindex="0">The automobiles category was a surprise for me, as I never would have guessed that judges would rank my landscaping truck ahead of my junked 442. I'm certainly not complaining about taking two trophies in a category, but I was certainly surprised by the results. When I got the bronze for the 442 I figured that was it for me -- and when they called me back I had no idea what it could be for.

<span class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"type":45,"tn":"*G"}" id="fbPhotoPageCaption" tabindex="0">Let me add that the Hobby Expo was, without question, probably the best single day event I've ever attended. It was very well organized, had an INCREDIBLE showing (easily 300-400+ models!), a lot of displays, and other clubs -- such as the 501st Garrison, Astro Mech makers, and lots of prop builders -- in attendance.

At this point only the armor on his legs is finished, but the rest is coming along nicely. I'm actually going to re-paint the gun in a blue - slightly lighter than the cloth you can see on the back of him.

I also need to do some touch-up where he was dropped on his back. OOPS!
The base was made by Roman Lappat of Massive Voodoo fame, and the ammo belt is from Dragon Forge Design.

I really didn't like the transition - and so today I re-masked the hood and gave the coat an even coverage of a deeper pink metallic. This also allowed me to paint the rims, so they'll match the paint now. It looks a bit more red in the camera phone pic, but it's actually a salmon pink.

The chair received a pink seat, and a carbon treatment similar to the hood. I'll might do some of that on the interior too... but only if it makes sense at the time. I'm still sorting through the pieces and working out the build/paint plan as this is the first time I've done this kit.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12009402133558129071noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4398708876500663381.post-84584710383915258432014-01-06T10:45:00.003-08:002014-01-06T10:45:48.135-08:00Commission: Hello Kitty Supra GT - Paint TransitionThe plan for this one was to fade it from a bright pink, to a dark purple, with the carbon fiber hood. Although I've managed to do this, I'm not entirely sure that I like it at this point. I'm hoping that I'll feel differently about it once the Hello Kitty icons are in place.
I just couldn't say no.

Now I haven't painted a pristine vehicle since... I honestly can't remember when. But I love Hello Kitty, I like the people involved, and I was glad for an opportunity to use some techniques that I don't generally get to play with. For instance:

I've known HOW to use a mask to create a carbon fiber effect, but I've never had a reason to try it.

Of course the hood on the kit is part of the body - which means that I now have to mask it off, and hope I don't mess it up, while I'm painting the rest of the car.

And the rest of the car will transition from a dark purple metallic in the front, to a bright metallic pink in the back. Because I can. I'll use masks to put Hello Kitty on the doors, tail, and on the hood.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12009402133558129071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4398708876500663381.post-16664681339497080552013-12-12T12:04:00.004-08:002013-12-12T12:04:52.245-08:00IPMS Regionals - 2013 - Best of Show!

I had the pleasure of attending an IPMS Regionals event, and came home with my first "Best of Show" award -- along with 5 gold, and 2 bronze awards. One of the judges let me know that one of the bronze would have been a gold, but for a very, painfully obvious seam... which I had, of course, totally overlooked. Alas. Still, you won't catch me complaining as I hadn't expected that model (Castle in the Sky - Diorama) to even make the first cut.

Best of Show - Marder III M (Artillery)
GOLD - Ruby (Figurines)
GOLD - "Fresh Meat" (Cars - Custom)
GOLD - 1966 Oldsmobile 442 Junker (Cars - Stock)
GOLD - Alien Bust (Sci-Fi)
BRONZE - "Castle in the Sky" (Diorama)
BRONZE - VW Chicken Coop (Cars - Custom)

I got some great feedback from the judges on several of my entries, and I'll make some improvements before the next show on those models that didn't place this time.

I have to admit that I was totally taken by surprise by the "Best of Show" award. I had already handed out the "Best Weathering" award (sponsored by Secret Weapon - so I got to hand it out) and figured my job was done for the day. They actually had to call my name three times to get me back up there. When I finally got to the stage we had a discussion that went something like this:

Me: Sorry, what's up?
Head Judge: Best of Show
Me: Sure, what did you need me to do?
HJ: You won.
Me: What?
HJ: Best of Show, you won it. For your Marder.
Me: Really?

There was a fair big of laughter at this point as much of that was picked up by the live mic. Oops!

And now it's time to get on to the next projects, and keep right on painting.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12009402133558129071noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4398708876500663381.post-62009529818382053832013-11-30T15:03:00.001-08:002013-11-30T15:03:43.795-08:00Landscaping Truck - FinalI'll add the bungee cords as soon as the elastic arrives, and work out some bumper stickers in the interim, but otherwise....
I wanted to add a bit between the models so I'd have an easier time reaching those spots -- and so I can control the white flower placement, which will become part of the focus control.

Of course I still need to finish painting the figures, but that's beside the point....

You get Pazu and a Guardian robot in one kit, with Sheeta and a Gardener robot in another -- so I had to buy both. The Guardian is in the mock-up, but I'll use the Gardener in the final. That little diorama will be a gift for my wife, while the Guardian will get his wings and be staged to jump off a cliff for my own collection.
There's a long way to go, of course, but I'm happy with the progress so far.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12009402133558129071noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4398708876500663381.post-44166778496400911672013-11-08T13:51:00.002-08:002013-11-08T13:51:39.940-08:00Rust - Two Versions - VideoWhen Secret Weapon Miniatures sponsors a "Best Weathering" category, I get to weather the trophies. We cast them in resin, and then I paint them, pigment them, and put them in a socket... which is why we don't sponsor a lot of "Best Weathering" categories!
A quick review of videos also made me realize that I haven't done a live broadcast in more than a year... and while I don't know that I'll go back to the live format, I certainly do hope to start getting back to videos here shortly.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12009402133558129071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4398708876500663381.post-45796184073045095402013-11-04T08:04:00.001-08:002013-11-04T08:04:29.435-08:00Landscaping Truck - WIPI really enjoyed the "Pick Up w/Equipment" kit from Meng Models -- which I had used to make my
Zombie Truck -- and quickly made plans to create another, more mundane version of the kit. Given my three year old son's obsession with yard work, "Misterjustin Lanscaping" was born.

The tool rack was scratch built from brass tube, the tool bin from plasticard, and the TOYOTA lettering is from Voyager and is intended for another one of the Meng truck kits.

Of course any landscaping truck is going to need tools... and so I'm having a set of them run through the 3D printer, with some extra water jugs that I will use on other projects.
It wasn't easy to close things up and hide all of the trash inside -- but there's enough going on that when you see the kit up-close you're drawn through the windows, so it's not all lost.

And now I need to not break it until the December IPMS event.....Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12009402133558129071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4398708876500663381.post-91631298369742450852013-10-12T21:38:00.000-07:002013-10-12T21:38:15.419-07:001966 Oldsmobile 442 - WIPThis is the 1966 Oldsmobile 442 kit from AMT models. As cheap car kits go it's a nice one, although it suffers from a one piece window insert, as most kits in this category do. Otherwise I have no complaints, and as I didn't use the windows...

I'm doing this one as an abandoned junker, so the little interior details are going to add a lot to the story. In this case those include a plastic trash bag, a few old beer cans, some newspapers, and a handful of Playboy issues, all with appropriate 1976 labels or covers.

The windows were made by spreading out a thin layer of Realistic Water and then sprinkling on some crushed glass. Once that dried I cut it to shape and glued it to the frame with some Water Effects.
I had the good fortune to be able to take a creature painting class with Casey Love (MIB 3, The Thing, Blood, Predator, Race to Witch Mountain, AvP, Resident Evil: Requiem), during which I got to paint one of his original sculpts.

Casey is an excellent teacher, and I really enjoyed the class -- although we spent a lot of time covering airbrush basics, not as part of the curriculum but because so many folks had done little or no airbrushing prior to this. This is not a complaint on my part though, because it's always good to get a take on the basics from an expert -- and Casey certainly qualifies!
