Old Japanese Man Bust

More progress on the Old Japanese Man bust. The skin is starting to smooth out and I've added shadows to the cloth. The white cloth only has a base coat of grey. I want to smooth out the skin and add more contrast - and add some highlights to the kimonos.

I might also try my hand at adding a flower to the headband... but I'm not sure yet.

Japanese Bust WIP

Fresh from the Happy Monk model I decided to try my Asian skin recipe on this incredible piece. I really love the detail on the face for this one. This is my first bust and I don't think I could have chosen a more interesting model. It measures 1.5" overall with a 0.75" face. That's about 20mm for my friends outside of the Colonies.

I still have a long way to go - especially to get the skin as dark as I'd like it to be in the recesses - but I'm really enjoying the process.

And I'm painting again. This is a good thing.

Happy Monk

Happy Monk is, at least for the time being, finished. I really enjoyed the model and there's still a lot that I would like to clean up -- but I'm learning that it's important to eventually set a model aside and move on. The things I'd like to improve on this model will be better on the next model. Just as this model is better than the previous.

That said I'm still very happy with this guy.

And now I think it's time to paint a tank.

Masterclass Workshop: 18-March, Santa Cruz, CA

I will be at Mythic Games in Santa Cruz for a hands-on weathering workshop. This class will cover pigment basics and the creation of rust, dust, mud, muck and other popular, realistic weathering effects.

There will be a one hour Q&A following the class to allow students time to get 1:1 feedback on their models and projects.

Students should bring paints, brushes, and a lamp but will be provided access to pigments and a model for the workshop.

The cost is only $20 if you pre-register, or $25 at the door, but the class is limited to the first twenty students so sign up early!

Happy Monk

More progress on Happy Monk - and lots of time spent on cleaning up his skin.

I'm going to get rid of the white spots on his beads as I don't feel they're necessary.

There's still plenty of shading and highlighting to be done on both the skin and the cloth -- but I feel like it's really starting to come together. I also tried the crosshatch technique for the first time on his stockings and like the texture it created.

And here's a look at him from all sides - as well as the complete composition.
